The Field Station for the Study of Behavior, Ecology and Reproduction occupies 29 acres in the hills above the Berkeley Campus.

It was established by faculty from Anthropology, Psychology, Zoology and the College of Natural Resources in the early 1960s to promote the investigation of animal behavior in more natural settings than those provided by traditional laboratory environments.

FSSBER has a long-sustained tradition of ecologically meaningful experimentation involving many species. Researchers coordinate observations in FSSBER's controlled semi-natural setting with ongoing studies in the natural habitat.

Currently there is an emphasis on studies of conservation-related issues -- establishing the basic patterns of reproduction, nurturance of young, foraging for food and constructing shelters.
